Nickel-60 is a stable isotope and undergoes no further decays after the transmutation is complete. The deposited cobalt-60 would have a half-life of 5.27 years, decaying into 60Ni and emitting two gamma rays with energies of 1.17 and 1.33 MeV, hence the overall nuclear equation of the reaction is: The cobalt would then condense and fall back to Earth with the dust and debris from the explosion, contaminating the ground. When the bomb explodes, the neutrons produced by the fusion reaction in the secondary stage of the thermonuclear bomb's explosion would transmute the cobalt to the radioactive cobalt-60, which would be vaporized by the explosion. Amongst other comments on it, Edward Moore Geist wrote a paper in which he says that "Russian decision makers would have little confidence that these areas would be in the intended locations" and Russian military experts are cited as saying that "robotic torpedoes could have other purposes, such as delivering deep-sea equipment or installing surveillance devices." Mechanism Decay of cobalt-60 showing the release of powerful gamma rays.Ī cobalt bomb could be made by placing a quantity of ordinary cobalt metal ( 59Co) around a thermonuclear bomb. If Status-6 does exist, it is not publicly known whether the leaked 2015 design is accurate, nor whether the 2015 claim that the torpedo might be a cobalt bomb is genuine. In 2018 the Pentagon's annual Nuclear Posture Review stated Russia is developing a system called the "Status-6 Oceanic Multipurpose System". It is not known whether the Status-6 is a real project, or whether it is Russian disinformation. Russian government newspaper Rossiiskaya Gazeta speculated that the warhead would be a cobalt bomb. The document stated the torpedo would create "wide areas of radioactive contamination, rendering them unusable for military, economic or other activity for a long time." Its payload would be "many tens of megatons in yield". The design was titled " Oceanic Multipurpose System Status-6", later given the official name Poseidon. In 2015, a page from an apparent Russian nuclear torpedo design was leaked. Photosynthesizing vegetation exists all around the lake that was formed. The high percentage contribution is largely because the devices primarily used fusion rather than fission reactions, so the quantity of gamma-emitting caesium-137 fallout was comparatively low. In Russia, the triple " taiga" nuclear salvo test, as part of the preliminary March 1971 Pechora–Kama Canal project, produced relatively high amounts of cobalt-60 ( 60Co or Co-60) from the steel that surrounded the Taiga devices, with this fusion-generated neutron activation product being responsible for about half of the gamma dose in 2011 at the test site. This was considered a failure and the experiment was not repeated. The Operation Antler/Round 1 test by the British at the Tadje site in the Maralinga range in Australia on September 14, 1957, tested a bomb using cobalt pellets as a radiochemical tracer for estimating yield. His intent was not to propose that such a weapon be built, but to show that nuclear weapon technology would soon reach the point where it could end human life on Earth, a doomsday device. The concept of a cobalt bomb was originally described in a radio program by physicist Leó Szilárd on February 26, 1950. For cancer radiation treatments delivered from a device with a cobalt-60 isotope source, see cobalt therapy.Ī cobalt bomb is a type of " salted bomb": a nuclear weapon designed to produce enhanced amounts of radioactive fallout, intended to contaminate a large area with radioactive material, potentially for the purpose of radiological warfare, mutual assured destruction or as doomsday devices. These colours are then embeded as streaks, veins or overall pigments in marble when it transforms. Higher proportions of calcium and low ratios of magnesium, as found in calcite limestone, tend to be lighter and contain more silvers and whites increases in magnesium content provide a balance of light, cool greys with sandy blonde or pink hues while dolomitisation occurs when magnesium-rich groundwater reacts with calcite to produce dolostone or dolomite rock, possessing darker greys or orange and brown shades owing to its higher levels of magnesium. Marbles can be used in architecture as aggregate in roads, hardcore and as a site levelling base in construction projects, or cut and highly polished for a smooth finished, dimensioned stone, varying in colour from pure white muddy or hazy creams, beiges, pinks, greys and browns depending on their chemical compositions. Due to the locations and circumstances in which marble transitions from limestone, it is normally found in large, geographically concentrated quantities, allowing it to be mined efficiently. Minerals present in the limestone pre-metamorphosis change in structure like the calcitic content: Clay transforms to complex silicates, further solidifying the new rock. Marble undergoes a unique transformation uncommon to other rocks formed by metamorphism whereby it doesn’t form in layers, or foliate, leaving a pristine, unblemished, seamless surface appearance. Immediately after the transition, calcite crystals are small, but grow in size to become interlocked, hiding any sedimentary structures and fossilised remains commonly found in limestone. Metamorphosis can also occur when limestone or dolomite rock is exposed to magma from the earth’s core when it punctures through to form magma chambers, or ruptures the earth’s surface and discharges under pressure. Marble is normally chemically transformed from limestone at the boundaries of convergent plates through direct exposure to the heat of the earth’s core combined with the pressure from the weight of layers above causing the calcite to recrystallise, changing the texture and characteristics of the rock, a process known as metamorphosis. The process of denudation, erosion and formation of the new rock is known as sedimentation. Some limestones form when calcitic minerals from plant and animal debris or remains break down, accumulate and are lithified and are known as organic sedimentary rock, occasionally containing fully intact fossils. The particles then undergo a process known as lithification over an extensive period of time, whereby particles are compacted in layers, compressed under their own weight and bound or cemented together when exposed to and combined with chemicals such as oxides or, with limestone, higher concentrations of carbonates, which helps increase the bond between the graduals and reduce the porosity of the newly formed rock. Calcitic minerals can also gather when left behind after bodies of water evaporate. The transportation process helps round and smooth the harder particles and remove weaker grains. High concentrations of the particles are deposited in one area, often setting on lower land or in bodies of water. Limestone, a sedimentary rock, is composed from calcium carbonate, forming when other types of rock are subject to a sequence of weathering and erosion known as denudation: Mechanical weathering from ice, water flow, waves, rain, wind or thermal activity strips or grinds down parts of the origin rock, with particles being eroded, or transported away from the source area, by glaciers, rivers, wind or water. A metamorphic, almost crystalline state variant of limestone, marble polishes to a very high finish, becoming almost completely smooth and reflective. Marble is rarely a dominant material in buildings due to its high cost, but can be found in ornate flooring, columns, countertops, staircases, cladding, or façade details. Marble typically posses a white finish in its purest form owing to its calcitic carbonate makeup, although other colours are displayed due to a variety of impurities within the stone, from other mineral and rock compositions such as clay, quartz, iron oxides and graphite. Marble is a hard, durable, exquisite stone used in architecture and design as both internal and external finishes. The joints are filled with mortar and are 5 mm (0.2 inches) in width. The image represents a physical area of 1215 x 840 mm (47.8 x 33.1 inches) in total, with each individual block measuring approximately 400 x 100 mm. On January 16, 2013, James was named one of the greatest basketball players of all time, and he dedicated himself to becoming one of the best ever. On December 29, 2004,LeBron James became the first NBA player to score the fewest points in a game when he attempted three shots and scored three points in a game against the Houston Rocket. Barea, he has averaged 17.8 points, 7.2 assists, and 6.7 boards. The moment served as a precursor to greatness to come, as it highlighted the struggles and pains of a young star still discovering his way in the game. Despite finishing the season with a 45-37 record, which was their first winning record in five years, the Pistons game remains one of James’ worst losses, despite the fact that the Pistons went on to win the NBA championship. In addition to their disastrous performance, the Cleveland Indians were outrebounded 63-29 and committed 22 turnovers. James, who was just 22 at the time, shot 2-of-14 from the field and committed four turnovers, totaling eight points, three assists, and three boards in 33 minutes. The 35 points scored in that game were the worst for James in his career, and it was the first time he scored fewer than ten points. On December 28, 2007, the Clevelandavaliers were humiliated by the Detroit Pistons, who demolished them 109-74. However, James was still in the midst of what would become his worst loss as a professional prior to that career-defining moment. He continued to be a dominant player and was a key factor in the Heat’s back-to-back championships in 20. Despite the loss, James was still named the NBA MVP for the 2010-2011 season. This was a major disappointment for fans and James alike, as he had been considered a favorite to win the championship. After leading the Miami Heat to the 2011 NBA Finals, he suffered a devastating loss to the Dallas Mavericks. In 2011, LeBron James was at the peak of his career. In the 2006 NBA finals, he averaged 22 points per game off the bench, and in the 2011 Finals, he averaged 18 points. Jason Terry: Dallas Mavericks, 2006: 22.0 points per game 2011 12.5 points per game. If you watch the clips, you may notice similarities between his performance and that of another little Puerto Rican guard who ruffled the feathers of NBA fans: Jose Alvarado. In the video, you can see how the two competed in David v. A two-minute highlight reel featuring JJ Barea has been viewed by many people as a threat to Cleveland’s superstar. Barea is only 5 feet 10 inches tall and is one of the shortest players to ever play in the NBA. During the 2011 playoffs, he averaged 9.4 points and 3.5 assists in less than 20 minutes per game. From his superior defensive play to his ability to attack the paint and score, Barea was able to challenge James in ways that few other players could.Īs a role player on the Mavericks’ championship team in 2011, he was one of the team’s stars. The diminutive point guard was able to outplay James on both ends of the floor, making many wonder: did JJ Barea outplay LeBron James in 2011? While there is no definitive answer to this question, it is safe to say that Barea certainly gave James a run for his money. Despite being the far bigger star, James had a difficult series – something that was largely attributed to the stellar play of Barea. The 2011 NBA Finals between the Miami Heat and the Dallas Mavericks marked a pivotal moment in the respective legacies of two of the league’s most iconic superstars: LeBron James and JJ Barea. That blend of tools and insight, applied to a work process, can be thought of as a social technology. Total quality management did that in manufacturing in the 1980s by combining a set of tools-kanban cards, quality circles, and so on-with the insight that people on the shop floor could do much higher level work than they usually were asked to. Occasionally, a new way of organizing work leads to extraordinary improvements. Because it combines practical tools and human insight, design thinking is a social technology-one that the author predicts will have an impact as large as an earlier social technology: total quality management. And experiments with new solutions reduce all stakeholders’ fear of change.Īt every phase-customer discovery, idea generation, and testing-a clear structure makes people more comfortable trying new things, and processes increase collaboration. Carefully planned dialogues help teams build on their diverse ideas, not just negotiate compromises when differences arise. For example, immersive customer research helps them set aside their own views and recognize needs customers haven’t expressed. Though ostensibly geared to understanding and molding the experiences of customers, design thinking also profoundly reshapes the experiences of the innovators themselves. In this article a Darden professor explains how design thinking helps people overcome this problem and unleash their creativity. Why? Because people’s biases and entrenched behaviors get in the way. While we know a lot about practices that stimulate new ideas, innovation teams often struggle to apply them. To find out more, you need to launch the Settings app, navigate to the General tab, and then open iPad Storage to get into the details. iPadOS comes with a detailed section that highlights the iPad Storage, breaking things down into a bar graph representing the amount of storage taken up by Apps, Photos, the System, Messages, and everything else. First Things First – Check the iPad Storageīefore diving into the different solutions to free up space on your iPad, you need to take a step back and look at the number first. Fret not, you aren’t the only sad Apple iPad user out there with this grave issue, and there are great ways to go around the limited storage space on your iPad. If you purchased the basic 32GB version of the iPad, you’re probably regretting it now that the storage space is almost at full capacity, and there does not seem to be a way to expand it. Unlike most Android tablets out there, the Apple iPad comes in preset storage variants, and there is no feature for expandable storage. The larger Retina HD display of the Apple iPad is capable of stunning visuals, which converts directly into large media files, leaving you wanting more storage space at times. Over the years, with the resolution of mobile devices increasing, and the quality of apps available, the need for more storage has been growing steadily. Here’s everything you can do to clean iPad memory and retrieve some of those precious gigabytes.īack in 2007 when the very first iPhone came out, it boasted a storage capacity that started at 4GB, which was sufficient for its time.
